Mas de Bret: the garage wine of the Alpilles
There is, in the term “garage wine,” a certain provocation, a freedom, and an idea of luxury that speaks to us.
Mas de Bret is exactly that: a singular, uncompromising project, nestled in the most beautiful valley of the Alpilles.
A rare place, a tiny cellar, and the desire to craft wine as one writes a story — with care for every word, every silence, every detail.
Garage wine, our way
Born in Bordeaux in the 1990s, the expression “garage wine” refers to wines produced in very small quantities, often in unconventional spaces — garages, backyards, workshops — by passionate winemakers going against the grain of industry standards.
They are auteur wines: precise, exacting, sometimes radical.
At Mas de Bret, the term came naturally. One only needs to see the cellar: a former 17th-century silk mill converted into a small winery.
The space is modest, almost confidential. Inside, you’ll find vats, barrels, a few bottles… and even an Indonesian ikat hanging on the wall.
Here, wine is created in an environment where every detail has meaning.
A small wine estate in the Alpilles
Mas de Bret spans two hectares of vines, nestled in a listed valley of the Alpilles.
A rare and demanding terroir, in the heart of the IGP Alpilles designation, where vines grow in stony soils, under the mistral wind and the dazzling light of the South.
Every grape is hand-picked. Each cuvée is conceived as a unique creation.
Our cellar mirrors the estate itself: small, precise, artisanal.
We work with our hands, our hearts, and constant attention.
This small scale allows us to stay fully connected to the wine — and to maintain an uncompromising level of care.
Two men behind the project
Mas de Bret is the story of Jean-Luc and Frédéric.
Two friends, two sensibilities, one shared passion for wine.
Jean-Luc, the intuitive aesthete, attuned to the emotion of a terroir.
Frédéric, the meticulous one, passionate about structure and balance.
Together, they form a complementary duo, united by the desire to create a wine that is free, sincere, and apart from mass production.
Their project was born from a place, a meeting, and a shared desire: to make wine as one writes on a blank page — with honesty and precision.
Here, we do not aim to please everyone.
We aim to be true to the place and to ourselves.
An embraced philosophy
We make little. And that is deliberate.
No volume, no compromise, no showmanship.
We believe in the power of silence, the strength of simplicity, and the intelligence of detail.
We reject marketing codes, market standards, and soulless repetition.
Making wine in the Alpilles, at our scale, is a committed choice — one of rarity, authenticity, and coherence.
Here, luxury is about taking the time. Doing less, but doing it better.
The wines of Mas de Bret
Each cuvée from Mas de Bret is the direct expression of the place: the minerality of the Alpilles, the tension of its limestone soils, the light that infuses the fruit.
We work with grape varieties adapted to the Mediterranean climate, always favoring finesse over power.
The wines of Mas de Bret are luminous, structured, always balanced, with a certain restraint.
They carry the imprint of the winemaker as much as the voice of the terroir.
Our winemaking is simple, without artifice, allowing the essential to shine through.
There are stories we could tell: a vintage shaped by the wind, a forgotten barrel that changed everything.
But once the wine is in the bottle, it no longer needs words.
It speaks for itself. And that, perhaps, is what we hope for most: that it moves you — simply, and without pretense.
A rare wine, rooted in the Alpilles
In the end, Mas de Bret is more than a small wine estate.
It is a way of being in the world, of making wine with respect, commitment, and humility.
A garage wine of the Alpilles, yes. But above all, a wine of place, of passion, and of friendship.
